Support Local Smoke-Free Restaurants

I was curious to see if the Tennessee state Legislature was planning to fall in line with other states regarding abolishing smoking in restaurants.

I talked to Glenda at Sen. David Fowler's office in Nashville and she referred me to TN CHART. (www.tnchart.org) Jeanette Schatz (jeanettte@tnchart.org) with TN Chart states the main issue this legislative session is to repeal preemption so that communities can have local control over restaurants.

CHART is an acronym for Coalition for healthy and responsible Tennesseans.

There are several restaurants in Chattanooga where I refuse to dine because the presence of smoke interferes with the aroma of my meal. Smell is equally as important as taste. Smoke not only interferes with my meal, it lingers on my clothes. I equate a smoky restaurant with a dirty restaurant.

I often host business lunches with clients and find I start my selection by striking all smoky restaurants off my list.

I have voiced my opinion and urge you to also. No action will be taken until the public demands change.

Shirley Cudabac at the American Lung Association has provided us a list of smoke-free restaurants. Add a restaurant to this list by calling the tobacco quit line, 209-8008, at the Hamilton County Health Department.
